Ram Kumari Jhakri, also Ramkumari Jhakri, is a Nepalese politician, member of parliament and former president of All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU). She currently serves as a legislator at the lower assembly of the federal parliament, representing Nepal Communist Party. She supports reservation for women, in the civil service.On 4 May 2019, she gave an interview to the talk show Janata janna chahanchhan (translation:People Want to Know) on Prime Times Television, in which she criticised her own party leader and prime minister KP Sharma Oli on the government’s program for the fiscal year 2019-20.
She said the prime minister’s programs were an insult to republicanism.She has also been critical of finance minister Yubaraj Khatiwada in the past.She was the first woman to be elected president of a major party affiliate student union. As the president of ANNFSU, she was one of the central figures of student protests during the 2006 democracy movement in Nepal.Ram Kumari Jhakri is a member of the Nepal Communist Party (Dahal-Nepal faction).
Jhakri was a member of the now-dissolved House of Representatives under the proportional representation system. She started her politics from then- CPN-UML’s student wing All Nepal National Free Student Union and later led the organisation as its first woman president following the 2008 general convention. After Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli dissolved the House, Jhakri joined the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-Madhav Kumar Nepal camp of the Nepal Communist Party.Police have said Jhakri would be interrogated for making remarks that have been prohibited by the law.
Earlier in the day, the Metropolitan Crime Division had called Jhakri to appear before the division for interrogation. Jhakri, however, had asked police to arrest her from her home by producing an arrest warrant.Before her arrest, she held a press conference at her residence.“This step of the government is a restriction on freedom of speech,” she said.It might also be to harass me because when dictators are about to fall, they use different tricks.”If found guilty for the crime against the state, a person is liable to a maximum of seven years of jail or Rs 70,000 fine or both.
